Rangitoto College Front Area

With a school role in excess of 3000 students, there is a huge volume of pedestrian traffic that crosses the front area of the school each day from the main school entry to the library and main classroom blocks. Students were cutting across the grass at the top of the front bank in large numbers, resulting in a large area of worn ground, dusty in summer and muddy in winter, and compacted in the rootzone of the existing trees. Our brief was to address the problem of worn surfaces along the top of the slope and under the existing pohutukawa and totara trees, to create an impressive and attractive front area for the school and to maximise this shaded and well-used area as a gathering and "hanging-out" space or students with seating, steps and viewing platforms to the north of the hockey turf.
