Mairangi Bay School - Amphitheatre and Playground

Amphitheatre Project. The central part of the school between classroom blocks and with the library and staffroom at either end was a disused space with a grassy bank too wet in winter and too steep to use, a concrete retaining wall too high to sit on and a concrete area too narrow and shady to be anything more than a path. The new classroom block at the front of the space offered a central covered area that had the potential to be part of a much larger performance and games area if the bank could also be modified to make a useful seating area. It was imagined that this area could become a sheltered "hub" of activity and space to sit for the whole school of 450 students. The space is now extremely well-used by the students and a very popular part of the school.

Playground Project. The school wanted to have a more challenging play environment, particularly for the older children. The playground was designed with a student committee appointed by the school to represent the students. Their ideas about the playground guided the design, drawn up as a scale drawing by designer, Jill, and sent to various playground manufacturers for their input. The design that the students felt best represented their ideas was selected by staff and students.
